Mackenzie Highway

The Mackenzie Highway is a highway in Alberta, Canada and the Northwest Territories. It starts at the Alberta Highway 2 at the Mile Zero in Grimshaw, Alberta. From 5 miles the road passes the name Alberta Highway 35 along its entire length to the border with the Northwest Territories and then under the name of Northwest Territories Highway 1

Originally the building was begun in 1938. Due to the Second World War the building was set, however, and resumed in the late 1940s and extended to Hay River.

1960 Highway was extended. About 38 kilometers south of Hay River, Enterprise, an approximately 38 km long piece of highway was set in a north-easterly direction. The course of this road leads piece via Fort Providence and Behchoko the capital of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife. Much of it is now known under the name Northwest Territories Highway 3 or as Yellowknife Highway. This section between Hay River and Enterprise is part of the Hay River Highway (Highway 2).

Around 1970, the highway was extended to Fort Simpson and 1971, when the section was opened to Fort Simpson, started work so that the road could be extended by Wrigley. The work was stopped, however. The road begins 3.5 km away from the island, is located on the "downtown" Fort Simpson. It was completed in 1994 and includes the N'dulee Ferry and several ice bridges.

East of Fort Simpson Airport crossed the street the Liard River in the summer a ferry and in winter by an ice bridge.

Extension

For an extension of the highway from Wrigley to the Dempster Highway was discussed as early as 1958. A connection to the North is so far only available in winter with the help of ice roads and bridges. The government, however, several studies in order to establish a fixed road link for the warm months. This project is located, but without specific end time, currently being implemented. There are already 34 bridges were built, there are only six rivers, over which further bridges have to be built.
