Macon County (Georgia)

The Macon County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Oglethorpe, named after General James Oglethorpe, founder of Georgia.

Geography

The County is located a few kilometers south-east of the geographic center of Georgia and has an area of ​​1051 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Peach County, Houston County, Dooly County, Sumter County, Schley County and Taylor County.

History

Macon County was formed on December 14, 1837 from parts of Houston County and Marion County. It was named for Nathaniel Macon, a general from South Carolina, statesman and President of the U.S. Senate.

During the American Civil War were in the southwest of Macon County's approximately 45,000 Union soldiers in captivity, of whom about 13,000 died of starvation and disease or the effects of wounds. Most of them are buried in the National Cemetery in Andersonville. In 1973, the former prisoner of war camp was restored as Andersonville National Historic Site.

27.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7 percent between 18 to 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males.
