Macon County (North Carolina)

Macon County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Franklin, which was named after the governor Jesse Franklin.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme western North Carolina, on the south by Georgia, is located in the north about 40 miles from Tennessee and has an area of 1345 square kilometers, of which 8 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Swain County, Jackson County, Clay County, Cherokee County and Graham County.

Macon County is divided into eleven townships: Burning Town, Cartoogechaye, Cowee, Ellijay, Flats, Franklin, Highlands, Millshoal, Nantahala, Smith Bridge and Sugarfork.

History

Macon County was formed in 1828 from parts of Haywood County. It was named for Nathaniel Macon, a spokesman for the Repräsententenhauses and Senator.
