Macrozamia macdonnellii

Macrozamia macdonnellii is a species of the genus Macrozamia within the order of cycads ( Cycadales ). The specific epithet (and the English common name MacDonnell Ranges Cycad ) refers to the area of origin of the MacDonnell Ranges.

Description
Vegetative characteristics
The tree-shaped Macrozamia macdonnellii is an above-ground, mostly short stem plant height of 0.4 to rarely 3 m and diameter of 60 to 80 cm reached. The strain grows very slowly, the growth of large plants, about 1 cm per year.
Macrozamia macdonnellii forms a crown of 50 to 120 leaves. The stalked 12 to 25 cm long, dull bluish foliage leaves with recurved rachis, stiff bent down a length of up to 1.5 to 2.2 m reach are weakly keeled and simply pinnate. A feathery foliage leaf has 120 to 170 leaflets. The cusped leaflets are straight, slightly rinnig with smooth edge; the lowest are reduced to spines, followed by about 15 to 25 mm wide, and the middle are 20 to 30 cm long and 0.7 to 1.1 cm wide.
Generative features
The male pins are thin with a length of 25 to 40 cm and a diameter of 8 to 10 cm; they end with a 0 to 25 mm long sting and have a 3 to 4 cm long and between 1.5 and 2 cm wide Mikrosporophylle.
The female pins have a length of 40 to 50 cm and a diameter of 20 to 27 cm; they end with a 0-2 mm long ovipositor and have 7 to 10 cm long Megasporophylle with a width 8 to 12.5 cm and a height of 4 to 6 cm schildförmigem end.
The number with a length of 6 to 8 cm and a diameter of 4 to 5.3 cm ovoid seeds are surrounded by an intense orange to orange-brown sarcotesta.
Occurrence
Macrozamia macdonnellii comes exclusively in Central Australia in the Northern Territory endemic to the mountains of the Macdonnell Ranges and some adjacent mountain ranges before. There they usually grows in or near the deep, partially shady ravines, on slopes in open stands of trees or grasses with barbed head covered areas before.
Macrozamia macdonnellii is the only genus Macrozamia, which is found in Central Australia.
Endangering
Macrozamia macdonnellii is not at risk than in their inventory. It is listed on Appendix II of the Washington Convention ( CITES).

The first description was under the name " Macdonelli " as Encephalartos macdonnellii Ferdinand von Mueller in Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel: verslagen s mededeelingen the Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen. 15, p 376, as ( 1863). 1868 presented Alphonse de Candolle Pyrame in Prodromus systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis, 16 (2 ), pp. 537, under the name Macrozamia macdonnellii ( F.Muell. Ex Miq. ) A.DC. placed in the genus Macrozamia.
