Madalena is a port city with a population of 2588 (as at 30 June 2011) on the island of Pico in the archipelago of the Azores, which belong to Portugal. Madalena is a major ferry port for connections to the neighboring island of Faial.
Geography
The village lies on the west coast of the island of Pico. About the Canal do Faial can be reached in 20 minutes the opposite Horta.
History
After taking possession of the uninhabited island in 1439 by the Kingdom of Portugal began their 1460 settlement. After sluggish progress Josse van Huerter received permission to settle here with a group he attached flames in 1466. 1723 Madalena seat of the newly created third administrative district of the island.
2004 by the UNESCO which operated in the circle Madalena viticulture of the Pico Island World Heritage Site.
Management
Madalena is the seat of a district of the same ( concelho ). His two neighboring districts on the island of Pico Lajes do Pico and São Roque do Pico.
