Madeira regional elections, 2011

The regional elections in Madeira in 2011 was the tenth regional elections in Madeira since the restoration of democracy in Portugal in 1974 and took place on 9 October. Here were 47 seats for the Regional Parliament of the Autonomous Region of Madeira to vote. The ruling Social Democratic Party of President Alberto João Jardim lost for the first time in its history, the absolute majority of votes, but holds 25 mandates continue the absolute majority of seats. Regional elections are held every four years in Madeira, the last election took place on 6 May 2007.

Election process

The final phase of the election campaign was marked by a financial scandal, in which Alberto João Jardim and his Social Democratic Party came under sharp criticism because the actual amount of debt was Madeira for years not specified correctly in the amount of five billion euros, leaving a shortfall of 1.1 billion euro only appeared in September 2011.

The since the Carnation Revolution alone ruling Social Democrats lost in the election as a consequence the absolute majority of votes, the worst result in its history, but have continued with 25 mandates an absolute majority in the 47- seat regional parliament. The opposition Portuguese People's Party ( PP CSD ) recorded with 17.63 percent and a tripling of their voices will be represented in the new parliament with 9 instead of 2 mandates. It solves the Socialist Party ( PS), which lost a mandate, the largest opposition party from the region. The newly occurred PTP won three seats right away, with all other parties, there were only minor shifts mandate.

The two main opposition parties CSD -PP and PS alleged irregularities during the election and brought a formal complaint with the Election Commission.
