Madeleine Angevine

Madeleine Angevine is a white grape variety. It is a new variety from a cross between the past Malingre and Madeleine Royale. The crossing was in 1857 in France, and sales began in 1863. The variety matures 15-20 days earlier than the Chasselas and can thus in certain areas by the end of July are harvested. The name Madeleine is an allusion to this stage of maturity, as the feast of Mary Magdalene on July 22 falls. The second part of the name derives from Angevin and means of Anjou.

The early maturing variety is in northern areas a popular table grape, which is hardly yet grown commercially. In England, in the state of Washington and Kyrgyzstan passable white wines are made from it in small quantities. Because of its early flowering and maturation, it was often crossing partners, for example, for the varieties Comtessa, Forta, Noblessa, Pearl of Csaba, Reichensteiner and Siegerrebe. 1903 Madeleine Angevine Oberlin variety was selected from a seedling.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is dichtwollig hairy with a slightly reddish hint at the edges. The young leaves are hairy hellflammig.
  • The medium-sized leaves are indented five lobes and strong. The petiole is sometimes lyrenförmig open but mostly closed with overlapping ends. The blade is serrated. The upper leaf surface (also called leaf blade ) is vesicular rough pronounced.
  • The drum-shaped grape is small to medium in size and loose-. The oblong berries are large and of a yellowish- whitish color. The berries are thin-skinned.

Previously Malingre matures nearly 15-20 days before the Chasselas. It is thus considered very early maturing. The variety is purely female flowers and contributes only moderately due to the concomitant irrigator. The berries have only limited usefulness because of the unpleasant taste for direct consumption.
