Madern Gerthener

Madern Gerthener (also: Gertener ) (* 1360, † 1430) was the city architect of the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt am Main, sculptor and one of the most important artists of the late Gothic period in the Middle Rhine.

Life

Gerthener was the son of a respected Frankfurter Steinmetz family. His father John was a member of the guild, the family lived in the middle of the 14th century on Karthäuserhof in Weißadlergasse.

1390 was Gerthener several years of wandering and came up with probably the famous Cologne architect Parler family in touch, which was in the 14th century particularly active in Nuremberg and Prague. No later than 1392 Gerthener returned back to Frankfurt and entered as a simple mason in the services of the city.

It is not known when Gerthener the city architect of Frankfurt climb, probably the end of the 1390er years. The first notarization of this rank comes from the year 1415th Around 1400 he married the wealthy citizens daughter Adelheid guilders for Schußhan and probably has since been one of the upper class of urban society at the latest. Since 1408 Gerthener also was architect of the Cathedral of the city. Except for the city and private clients in Frankfurt, he also worked outside the city, especially for the Electors of Mainz and the Palatinate.

1419 Gerthener traveled to Strasbourg, to compete for the succession of the late architect Ulrich von Münster Ensingen, was commissioned to finally Ulrich's longtime collaborator John Hültz.

Works

Because documents are missing, Gertheners can authorship be assumed for many buildings only on the basis of stylistic similarities or stonemason.

  • As a sculptor Gerthener created, among other numerous times and grave tabernacle, some of which are still present in Frankfurt churches.
