Madison County (Iowa)

The Madison County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 15 679 inhabitants and a population density of 10.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Winterset, birthplace of John Wayne.

The Madison County is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Des Moines.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Iowa, is about 70 km from Missouri and has an area of 1,456 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Madison County was on 13 January 1846 former parts of Polk County in what was then Iowa - formed territory. It was named (1809-1817) by James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth President of the United States.

Under self-administration, the Madison County stands since 1849.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Madison County 15 679 people in 5,843 households. The population density was 10.8 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 98.1 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.3 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 5,843 households lived statistically 2.54 per person.

27.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.0 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.8 percent were 65 years or older. 50.3 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 55,607. The per capita income was $ 26,775. 8.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
