Madison County (North Carolina)

Madison County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Marshall, which was named after John Marshall, a presiding judge of the Supreme Court of the United States (Supreme Court ).

Geography

The County is located in western North Carolina, bounded on the north Tennessee and has an area of 1170 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Yancey County, Buncombe County and Haywood County.

Madison County is divided into eleven numbered townships: 1 ( North Marshall and South Marshall), 2 ( Laurel ), 3 ( Mars Hill ), 4 ( Beech Glenn ), 5 ( Walnut ), 6 ( Hot Springs ), 7 ( Ebbs Chapel ), 8 ( Spring Creek ), 9 ( Sandy Mush ), 10 ( Grapevine ) and 11 ( Revere Rice Cove ).

History

Madison County was formed in 1851 from parts of Buncombe County and Yancey County. It was named after President James Madison.

According to the census of 2000, there were 19,635 people in Madison County. Of these, 895 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 8,000 households and 5,592 families.
