Madison is a small town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of South Dakota and the county seat ( county seat ) of Lake County. The population is 6,540 (as of 2000).

The place that was so in 1873 and before his elevation to the town the county seat of Lake County, is located between two major lakes: Lake in the west and Lake Herman Madison in the East. The latter is used extensively in the summer for water sports. The area is sparsely populated and agricultural. Crops are maize and cereals in particular.

In Madison, is the campus of Dakota State University, is nationally known for their computer science courses. West of Madison is the museum village " Prairie Village ", which shows life on the prairie in 1900.
