Madog ap Maredudd

Madog ap Maredudd († 1160 ) was a king of the Welsh principality of Powys.

Life

He was the second son of Maredudd ap Bleddyn and his wife Hunydd. After his older brother Gruffydd 1128 death he was heir to his father, who died in 1132. During the Anarchy of King Stephen he could shake off the English supremacy over Powys and reclaim the Anglo-Normans lost territories. In the battle of Lincoln, he and his warriors were next Cadwaladr ap Gruffydd of Gwynedd, and Owain Morgan from Caerleon to the " terrible Welsh mob " who supported Ranulph, Earl of Chester. 1149 he conquered even Oswestry in Shropshire, he could hold to 1157. After his death and the death of his planned as the main heir son Llywelyn 1160 Powys was divided and never united again in the hands of a Welsh ruler. The southern part of Powys became an independent principality, which was later named after Owains son Gwenwynwyn Powys Madog 's nephew Owain Wenwynwyn below. The northern part was divided among Madog sons. To distinguish them from Powys Wenwynwyn it was named after Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor Powys Madog grandson Fadog.
