Mae Faggs

Heriwentha " Mae " Faggs Starr ( born April 10, 1932 in Mays Landing, New Jersey; † 27 January 2000) was an American track and field athlete and Olympic champion.

The extraordinary athlete from Tennessee State University in 1948, took part in the Olympics, but was unable to qualify for the finals in the 200 -meter run. In the Pan -American Games in 1955, she won gold in the 4 x 100 - meter relay and silver in the 200 -meter run. In addition, she won eleven national titles, six of them at indoor championships. She was the first American track and field athlete, who participated in three Olympics.

In the XV. Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952, she won the team gold medal in the 4 x 100 - meter relay along with teammates Barbara Jones, Janet Moreau and Catherine Hardy, the team from Germany ( silver) and the team from Great Britain ( Bronze). In the XVI. Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, she won the team bronze medal again in the 4 x 100 - meter relay, together with teammates Margaret Matthews, Wilma Rudolph and Isabelle Daniels, behind the team from Australia (Gold ) and the team from Great Britain ( silver).
