Mae Hong Son ( Thai: แม่ฮ่องสอน ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง แม่ฮ่องสอน ) in Thailand's Mae Hong Son province in the northern region of Thailand. It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Mae Hong Son and Mae Hong Son province

Location

The town is 300 meters above sea level one of the most elevated provincial capitals in Thailand. It is surrounded by one to about 1500 meters high mountain landscape with jungle and rainforest. The remote location meant that Mae Hong Son was to be achieved by 1973 only by airplane in the rainy season, as all the roads were flooded.

Climate

The town of Mae Hong Son is located in the cooler north of Thailand, in the tropical monsoonal climate. In the months of November to April is the dry season and it falls relatively little rainfall. Especially during December and January, temperatures can drop to at night to 13 ° C in the mountainous region. History

  • Wat Chong Kham - the Buddhist temple ( wat ) located on the shores of a small lake right next to another temple, Wat Chong Klang. Both are built in Burmese style.
  • Doi Kong Mu - mountain at Mae Hong Son with a temple complex from which a beautiful view of the city and the landscape is possible. Two huge stone lions standing back to the summit.
  • National Parks: Namtok Mae Surin National Park - the 397 km ² large park was declared in 1987 for the 37th national park of Thailand.
  • Mae Ngao National Park - the 257,65 Rai park is named after the Mae - ngao River ( Maenam Mae ngao ). He is the headwaters of many rivers that flow into the Salween River.
