Mae Jemison

Mae Carol Jemison ( born October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, United States) is a former American astronaut.

1973 Jemison started at the age of almost 17 years studying at Stanford University in 1977 and received a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1981, she received the Professional Doctorate in Medicine from Cornell University.

Your internship Jemison graduated from the Los Angeles County - USC Medical Center. From January 1983 to June 1985, she worked as a doctor in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Upon her return to the U.S. she continued to work as a doctor in California and came by the way study courses in mechanical engineering.

Astronauts activity

In June 1987, Jemison was selected by NASA as an astronaut contender. Then helped with the launch preparations at Kennedy Space Center and the Shuttle Avionics Integration software developed Laboratory ( SAIL).

STS -47

On September 12, 1992 Jemison started as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Endeavour to the tenth Spacelab mission. On board 43 experiments of various kinds were carried out, for example, it was tested whether hornets have the ability to build honeycombs under microgravity. The result was negative. Even in the medical field experiments were operated. With Jemison flew on this mission, the first African-American woman in space.

After her retirement from NASA in March 1993 Jemison worked as a doctor again.

Early 2012, took over the management of the Mae Jemison 100 - Year Starship projects, a basic research project for interstellar spaceflight.
