Maersk Air was a Danish airline based in Copenhagen. Maersk Air was merged in 2005 with another airline to Sterling Airlines.

History

The airline was founded by the group AP Moller- Maersk in 1969. The group looked at the air freight as an additional component of their economic expansion efforts. AP Møller Mærsk, took over in 1969 Falck Air and named them into Maersk Air. The flight operations began in December 1970 with three aircraft of type Fokker F-27 from Copenhagen to Munich and London. In 1971 followed Flights to Vágar in the Faroe Islands. In the same year the Company Danair formed with Scandinavian Airlines System and Cimber Air as a common holding company.

After Maersk Air had taken the two Danish tour operators Raffels Rejser and Bangs Rejser in December 1971, the company expanded and acquired in January 1973, first three used Boeing 720 from the Northwest Orient Airlines. The first flight of the Boeing 720 was used on 31 March 1973 by Copenhagen to Rhodes. As of January 1976, the company put the aircraft on a transatlantic charter flights to Canada and the United States. In the same year, Maersk Air received its first Boeing 737-200, the Boeing 720 replaced gradually by the end of 1981.

In the 1980s, Maersk Air began to fly to international destinations also in scheduled air transport, initially Stavanger and Southend -on-Sea. In 1989, the company acquired the Copenhagen Airport Services and built together with the Lufthansa Cargo Center a.

On 30 June 2005 the company was sold to the Icelandic investment company Fons Eignarhaldsfélag. In September this year, the new owner has led the company into the new Sterling Airlines, and sold it back to the owner of Icelandair, the FL Group.
