La Magdalena Contreras is one of 16 districts ( delegaciones ) of Mexico City. The district is located in the southwest of the Mexican capital, and is almost entirely on delegaciones Álvaro Obregón ( north and west ) and Tlalpan included (east and south). He has one of the highest proportions of green space of Mexico City and also flows the Magdalena River, the only river of the Mexican capital, through the district.
In the 17th century, Franciscan and Dominican missionaries in the region settled down to evangelize the natives. To this end, they built a chapel in honor of St. Mary Magdalene, which was later incorporated into the place name. The second part of the name is reminiscent of the former landowners Tomás de Contreras.
Due to its large green area fractions it was possible the district to specialize with the Forest Park Los Dinamos and San Bernabé Ocotepec on ecotourism.
