Magdalena Maleeva

Magdalena Maleewa ( Bulgarian Магдалена Малеева; born April 1, 1975 in Sofia) is a former Bulgarian tennis player.

She played 1989-2005 on the WTA Tour. The winner of ten WTA tournaments in singles and five in double has two sisters, Manuela and Katerina. All three reached the top ten in the world rankings and broke several records. Thus, all three in 1993 were conducted simultaneously in the Top 15. At the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon all three were set to the 16 players. At the French Open, she wrote then jointly Grand Slam history than all reached the knockout stages. Manuela was the most successful of the trio, reaching third place in the 1984 world rankings, Katerina was listed in 1990 on six and Magdalena can boast four position as the best ranking (double space 13).

Career

Your greatest success Maleewa indoors on carpet or on her favorite surface "Indoor Hard Court ." She won three times the WTA tournament in Moscow ( Record winner, 2002 as Tier I) and 1995 the tournament (including Tier I) in Zurich.

In their best season ( 1995) Maleewa also achieved in addition to the three titles each in the final of the big tournaments of Hilton Head, Leipzig and Berlin. At the end of the year she was in sixth, it was her best year-end position. The following year it reached after the final of Madrid with number four the highest ranking of her career.

Between 1996 and 1998, she was plagued by increasing injuries. A shoulder surgery that took a year off (1998/1999) by itself, was the result. But after her return, she fought back under the 15 best in the world. Twice she was away in the top 10 in 2003, just one win from returning. In the same year she also had her best season double when she won with Liezel Huber, the Tier I tournament in Miami and the Tier II tournament in Warsaw and at the end was allowed to travel as a replacement wife for Masters of the four best teams. She reached in 2001 and again in 2002, the Masters, after she had been already qualified in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Her best performance in Grand Slam tournaments was reaching the quarter- finals of the U.S. Open in 1992.

A traumatic experience had to make Maleewa 1993 quarter-final opponent of Monica Seles on that day in Hamburg, when it was severely wounded by the insane Steffi Graf, Günter Parche pendant by a knife attack and set for years out of action.

Maleewa could defeat almost all sizes of tennis in her career, so among other things, Martina Navratilova, Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Conchita Martínez. After a second-round defeat in Zurich against Patty Schnyder in late 2005, she announced her resignation.

Private

Magdalena Maleewa is married to her longtime friend Lubomir Nakow since 2004. On June 27, she had her first child, which she named after her mother Yulia. This was after the retirement of their main needs. Maleewa now owns the clothing line Capasca and is active in various fields such as "organic farming" or planting trees in Sofia.
