Magdalena of Saxony

Magdalene of Saxony ( born March 7, 1507 in Dresden, † January 25, 1534 in Berlin) was a princess of Saxony and by marriage Kurprinzessin of Brandenburg.

Life

Magdalene was a daughter of Duke George of Saxony (1471-1539), from his marriage to Barbara (1478 - 1534), daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland. Magdalene was brought up by her parents in the Catholic faith.

They married on November 6, 1524 in Dresden, later to become the Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg ( 1505-1571 ). In the elaborate ceremony alone almost 3000 guests should have appeared on horseback, including 24 ruling princes. At the express request of the bride's father, the marriage ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Mainz.

In the ten years of their marriage Magdalene gave birth to seven children. She died age 27 shortly after the birth of her youngest child; the shock of a swerving fire near to have accelerated his death. The events of the death of his daughter, which shortly followed also the death of his wife, Magdalene's father hit so hard that he no longer shaved from Gram and was nicknamed " the bearded one".

A year later, Magdalena's widower when Joachim II Elector of Brandenburg and married the same year to his second wife Hedwig of Poland.
