Name

There are no older written references of the stream, all consider the place of Magdala. The original name was probably Madel. It would be conceivable a popular etymological derivation of maid. The original name derives probably from Old High Madal ( meeting place ), the Gothic Mathel ( marketplace ), Anglo-Saxon mädhel ( meeting place ) or the Middle High German Mahel ( People's Court site ) ago. When you place a derivation from the Old High German mad, math ( mat, grass land ) is conceivable. However, as a basic word aha ( a variant of the -au ) is busy for the middle of the 19th century. The name would thus dish water or water meadow. Since an appropriate naming of the place seems unlikely, the creek is likely to be its name to the place.
