Magenta, Lombardy

Magenta is a municipality with 22,930 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Province of Milan, Lombardy region. The film producer Carlo Ponti (1912-2007) was born in Magenta.

The nearby towns of magenta are Marcallo con casone, Santo Stefano Ticino, Corbetta, Boffalora sopra Ticino, Robecco sul Naviglio and Cerano (NO).

History

Magenta was probably a settlement of the tribe of the Insubres, that was founded in the 5th century BC. In the year 222 the area was conquered by the Romans. The place name is derived from the name of Magenta Roman fortress from castrum Maxentiae. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the city fell into the realm of the Lombards.

In the Middle Ages Magenta was destroyed twice, once in 1162 by Frederick I, and in 1356 by troops who fought against the Visconti. According to legend, here Henry VII was stopped by a snow storm when he marching to Milan. 1398 gave Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the area of the village to the Charterhouse of Pavia ( Certosa di Pavia). On June 4, 1859 an important battle in the Sardinian War took place in the area magentas.

Magenta is one of 9,543 households. Between 1991 and 2001, the population fell from 23,667 to 22,839.
