Magistrats Européens pour la Démocratie et les Libertés

Magistrate pour la Démocratie et les Européens Libertés ( MEDEL ) is a European organization of judges and prosecutors, whose name in German means: European judges for democracy and freedom rights.

MEDEL was founded in 1985 on the initiative of 10 associations of judges and prosecutors from Europe.

Longtime Chairman is Edmondo Bruti Liberati, also the President of the Italian Association of Judges ANM.

Member organizations

In 2006 MEDEL had 15,000 members mediated by 15 organizations of judges and prosecutors from 10 EU Member States.

Monitoring by SISMI

Beginning of July 2007 revealed the Supreme Judicial Council of Italy that the Italian military secret service SISMI has monitored between 2001 and 2006 prominent judges and prosecutors in Italy. Were affected, among others, Attorney Antonia Ingroia, the determined via cross-connections between mafia and politics, the prosecutors who determined in Milan against Silvio Berlusconi, and the longtime chairman Medel, Edmondo Bruti Liberati. Among other things, the e -mail traffic, the judge was monitored. Thus many European judges were the member Medel are monitored. Of the 203 monitored judges, 47 were Italians, the rest come from 12 other European countries.
