Magliocco Canino

Magliocco Canino is a red grape that is cultivated in the Italian region of Calabria. The species was once one of the most common red varieties of Calabria, but is now grown only at about 1500 hectares. It is particularly recommended in the provinces of Catanzaro and Cosenza, but is also cultivated in other parts of Calabria. Small stocks are also known in Switzerland. ( 9.7 acres, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG )

Maglioco Canino is often with the variety Gaglioppo ( with which they may be related ) blended. Verrwirrenderweise it is occasionally also known under the synonym itself Gaglioppo.

A well-known wine from Maglioco Canino is the Rubino Winery Vignaioli del Pollino. It contains portions of 90 percent Magliocco Canino and 10 percent Aglianico.

It is unclear whether Magliocco Canino with the very rare grape variety Magliocco Dolce from the Ciro - area is the same as in the Calabrian province of Crotone. From this, the winery Librandi keltert for some years the high-class varietal wine Magno Megonio.
