Magnac-sur-Touvre

Magnac -sur -Touvre is a municipality with 3056 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Charente region of France in the Poitou -Charentes.

Location

The municipality is located in the metropolitan area of Angoulême in the ancient cultural landscape of the Angoumois, about eight km ( driving distance ) east of the city, on the southern shore of the Touvre that opens in Angoulême in the Charente.

Demographics

In the 19th century the population of about 600 rose to over 1,800 in 1900, in 1800. Due to the proximity to the city Angoulême and comparatively cheaper property prices, the population of the community has grown to over 3,000 inhabitants.

Economy

The town and its surroundings were dominated for centuries for agriculture. In the early modern period occurred on the banks of the Touvre two paper mill, one of which was transferred into an automatic Prokuktion in 1828.

History

First mentioned in the year 852 under the name Magnacum, found in medieval documents name as Magnac, Magny and magnate. The Romanesque church suggests the existence of a not insignificant medieval settlement.

Attractions

  • Built from precisely hewn limestone Romanesque parish church ( Église Saint- Cybard ) dates from the 12th century and impressed from afar by its richly structured crossing tower, whose middle floor is surrounded by arcades, located wohingegegen the significantly higher bell storey by double arcades with set columns wide opens. The multi-stepped, but otherwise completely unadorned western portal is laterally accompanied by two huge buttresses that stabilize the construction. This very short nave, two transepts and the apse flat closed form approximate the shape of a Greek Cross after and are barrel vaulted; the crossing is, however, covered by a dome resting on pendentives. The church has already been recognized in 1907 as a monument historique.
  • Along the riverside, is a covered wash area ( lavoir ) from the 19th century.
  • Surrounded by a beautiful park Logis de Maumont originally dates from the 16th century and is in the vicinity of an old paper mill on the banks of the Touvre. It is privately owned and was restored several times.
  • The Logis de Bussac dates from the 15th century and is also privately owned.
