Magnesium peroxide is a chemical compound of the elements magnesium and oxygen. It has the formula MgO2 and belongs to the group of peroxides.
Production and representation
The hemihydrate of magnesium can be precipitated with hydrogen from a saturated solution of magnesium nitrate. For this the anhydrate can be obtained by heating in nitrogen.
Also possible is the extraction from the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with magnesium oxide. The resulting crystalline substance has the composition MgO2 · 0.12 · 0.61 H2O H2O2.
Properties
Magnesium peroxide is a fine-powdered, colorless compound. It is similar to calcium and is by controlled reaction with aqueous solutions of oxygen. It has a crystal structure of the pyrite - type and decomposes above 300 ° C for magnesium oxide.
Use
Magnesium peroxide is used for the release of oxygen in the cosmetic, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. It is also used to reduce and freizuwaschen contamination of groundwater. Magnesium is also used for natural decontamination and quality improvement of agricultural land. It can therefore be used as a bleach or disinfectant. Also in deodorants and shower gels, it will be used.
