Magnus, Duke of Saxony

Magnus (* 1045, † August 23, 1106 on the Ertheneburg ) was Duke of Saxony from the family of Bill Unger.

Life

Magnus was the eldest son of Duke Ordulfs. He was a bitter enemy of Archbishop Adalbert of Bremen, whose pen he struck with repeated plundering. 1070 he supported the rebellion Otto of Northeim against King Henry IV, was taken after its completion in custody and not released even after Ordulfs death in 1072 because he refused to buy the liberation of the abandonment of the duke.

It was only by the revolt of the Saxons in 1073 he was released from the resin castle, but taken prisoner again in 1075 after the victory of Henry IV in Homburg at the Unstrut ( Langensalza ). Already released in 1076, he fought in the ranks of the supporters of the anti-king Rudolf in the Battle of Mellrichstadt ( 1078 ), where he saved his life with difficulty. He later reconciled with Henry and fought against the Lusatians. In 1093 he helped the allied with him Samtherrscher the Abodrites Heinrich von Alt -Lübeck in the Battle of Schmilau to secure its power against its pagan population, who did not want to accept Christianity or charges payable under the new law. Magnus died in 1106 without children. With him died out in the male line of the family of Bill Unger, whose duchy was transferred to Lothar of Süpplingenburg while the family estates were inherited by his two daughters to the Ascanians and the Guelphs.

Progeny
