Magnus Johnson

Magnus Johnson ( born September 19, 1871 Karlstad, Sweden, † September 13, 1936 in Litchfield, Minnesota ) was an American politician of the Farmer-Labor Party, who represented the state of Minnesota in both chambers of Congress. He is the only native Swede, who has hitherto belonged to the Senate of the United States.

Life

In his native Sweden Värmland Magnus Johnson attended the village schools. From 1888 to 1891 he was trained as a glassblower. In 1891 he moved to the United States, where he first settled in La Crosse (Wisconsin ). Later he found in Meeker County, Minnesota employment as a factory worker, and as a lumberjack before he pursued an activity as a farmer. From 1913 he was prior to the establishment of the American Society of Equity in Minnesota, a cooperative association of farmers, who are increasingly established itself as a political force. He also served as Vice President of controlled by the Association Grain Exchange and Farmers ' Terminal Packing Company. At the local level, he held several positions in school administration from Kingston.

Policy

Johnson's political career began with membership of the House of Representatives from Minnesota 1915-1919; after he sat until 1923 in the state Senate. In 1922 and 1926 he appeared as a candidate of the Farmer-Labor Party on in the gubernatorial elections, but failed to Republicans JAO Preus and Theodore Christianson.

After the death of U.S. Senator Knute Nelson on April 28, 1923 Johnson appeared at the time of election to its mandate and won against the incumbent Governor Preus, whereupon it his mandate in Washington DC could perceive from 16 July of the same year. But at the next regular election, he defeated Republican Thomas David sound with almost 8,000 votes behind; so he had the Senate on March 3, 1925 to leave. On 13 September of the same year Magnus Johnson died in Litchfield, where he had gone for a medical treatment. He was buried in Dassel.
