Magoffin County, Kentucky

Magoffin County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Salyersville, which was named after Samuel Salyer, a member of the Legislative Assembly.

Geography

The County is located in Eastern Kentucky, is in the southeast about 60 miles from Virginia, in the northeast about 70 km from West Virginia and has an area of 801 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Morgan County, Johnson County, Floyd County, Knott County, Breathitt County, and Wolfe County.

History

Magoffin County was formed on February 22, 1860 from parts of Floyd County, Johnson County and Morgan County. It was named after the Governor Beriah Magoffin.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,332 people in Magoffin County.
