Magoffin County, Kentucky
Magoffin County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Salyersville, which was named after Samuel Salyer, a member of the Legislative Assembly.
Geography
The County is located in Eastern Kentucky, is in the southeast about 60 miles from Virginia, in the northeast about 70 km from West Virginia and has an area of 801 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Morgan County, Johnson County, Floyd County, Knott County, Breathitt County, and Wolfe County.
History
Magoffin County was formed on February 22, 1860 from parts of Floyd County, Johnson County and Morgan County. It was named after the Governor Beriah Magoffin.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,332 people in Magoffin County. Of these, 175 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,024 households and 3,858 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 99.29 percent White, 0.15 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, and 0.02 percent from other races; 0.27 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.42 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,024 households out of which 37.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, 23.2 percent were non-families, 21.4 percent of all households and 8.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.04.
Based on the county the population was spread from 26.8 percent population under 18 years, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 94.4 men statistically.
The median income for a household was 19,421 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 24,031. Males had a median income of $ 27,745, women $ 18,354. The per capita income was $ 10,685. 31.2 percent of families and 36.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 45.9 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 29.1 percent of those 65 years.
