Mahadevi Varma

Mahadevi Varma (Hindi: महादेवी वर्मा, Mahadevi Varma, born May 26, 1907 in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, † September 11, 1987 in Allahabad ) was an Indian poet and writer. It is one of the most important representatives of romantic modern Hindi literature and was awarded 1982 Jnanpith Award.

Biography

Mahadevi Varma grew up in Jabalpur and moved with her husband, with whom she was married in childhood, in the 1920s to Allahabad. The couple lived mostly separated and each went his interests after. She received a Masters degree in Sanskrit at the University of Allahabad. Her husband died in 1966. Mahadevi Varma, who had, rebelled with your refusal to live the marriage against Hindu traditions, was impressed by Buddhism.

Her literary work began in the 1930s with romantic poetry. Although Mahadevi Varma is often compared due biographical parallels with the poet Mirabai is different their literary themes. Awards

Mahadevi Varma received several Indian State Awards: Padma Bhushan in 1956, the 1982 Jnanpith Award and the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 1988.
