Mahakam in Samarinda
The Mahakam is the longest river in the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Timur in East Borneo. It reaches a length of 960 km, of which 523 km are navigable and flows near the city of Samarinda in the Makassar Strait. In particular, lying in a geological depression middle Mahakam region with an area of about 8100 square kilometers is considered to be particularly rich in various species of animals. Here are about thirty smaller lakes and the three great lakes Jempang, Melingtang and Semayang. Larger tributaries are Belayan, Kedang Kepala and Kedang Rantau.
A boat with 44 wood workers sank in April 2013 on the river, after it had been hit by a big wave. Five people were still missing two days after.
