The Mahalangur Himal with a maximum height of 8848 meters the highest mountain range on earth. It is part of the Himalayas and is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet ( China). With the Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu are four eight-thousanders to the massif. In addition a large number of mountains with an altitude of over 7,000 meters.

Location

The Mahalungur Himal is situated in eastern Nepal and in neighboring Tibet. Eastern boundary of Mahalangur Himal are the River Arun and the pass Popti La. Beyond the Arun is the Umbak Himal, which in turn adjoins Janak and Kangchenjunga Himal. In the west the Mahalangur Himal is limited to the Tibetan side by the Gyorag Glacier, the aim of Nangpa La north. On the Nepali side represent the Nangpa glaciers and Bothe Koshi glacier, in the former flows is the boundary that continues over the rivers Bothe Kosi and (south of Namche Bazar ) Dudh Kosi.

Subdivisions

The Mahalungur Himal is divided into three Subjections. In the north- east is the Makalu Makalu and Subjection with Chomo Lönzo, which is separated by the river from the Barun Barun Subjection to the southeast. To Barun Subjection include Baruntse, Chamlang, Ama Dablam and Kangtega. The Khumbu Subjection is the western and largest subdivision. Here you will find Everest, Lhotse and Cho Oyu as well Changtse, Pumori and Taboche. The Khumbu Subjection is separated by the Kharta Glacier, the Karpo La and about 6130 meters high saddle east of Shartsey of the Makalu Subjection to the northeast. South of Shartsey the saddle to Cho Polu lies as the boundary for Barun Subjection, which continues to the south and east over Lhotse Shar Glacier, Imja glacier and Dudh Kosi.

National Parks

On the Nepali side of the Mahalangur Himal two national parks have been established: The Sagarmatha National Park, World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in the west and its eastern extension, the Makalu Barun National Park -. On the north side lies the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, which is treated as Qomolangma Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
