Mahanoy City is a city in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in the United States.

Geography

The city is located 15 km north of Pottsville, 20 kilometers south of Hazleton, five kilometers east of Shenandoah and 10 kilometers west of Tamaqua. The nearest major town is Reading, which is located at a distance of about 70 kilometers. Near the Interstate 81 highway passes.

History

The name of the place is based on the created by the Shawneeindianern name " Maghonioy " was transformed by settlers in 1849 in Mahanoy and later accompanied by the words "City". Main livelihood was mining. Between 1862 and 1866 the population grew to about 6,000 people, and from twenty mines 250 tons per day Anzhrazitkohle were promoted. Thereafter, the number of miners continued to rise after 1920 but went back again.

Demography

The 2000 census (United States Census 2000) showed a total population of 4647 people, divided into 2113 households. The share of the fair-skinned population was almost 99 %.
