The Mahaweli ( Sinhalese: මහවැලි ගඟ mahavæli Ganga, Tamil: மகாவலி ஆறு mahāvali ARU or மகாவலி கங்கை mahāvali Gangai ) is 335 km long, the longest river in Sri Lanka. He has all the rivers of the country and the largest catchment area, which occupies one-fifth of the island.
The river empties into the Bay of Bengal on the southwestern coast of Trincomalee Bay. The bay has several submarine canyons, which make it one of the largest natural deep-water ports in the world. The Mahaweli itself and its tributaries are repeatedly impounded to ensure the irrigation of arid zones. Six dams are also used to generate electricity.
