Mahébourg

Mahebourg is the district capital of Grand Port, a district of Mauritius. The former capital has 15,753 inhabitants and is situated in the east of the island, four miles from its only airport, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Mahebourg has, because of its location by the sea, a strong tourism, which is adjacent to the commercial one of the main sources of income of the city.

History

Mahebourg was founded in 1589 as a small settlement by the Dutch, during their brief period on the island. The current name of the city comes from Mahe de LABOURDONNAIS a French admiral and governor of the colonial period. Mahebourg has long been the capital of the island, to a large part of the population was killed by a malaria epidemic; Port Louis then took over the role of the capital. Due to the large proportion of buildings from the colonial period Mahebourg has a special flair.
