Bhim Datta, formerly Mahendranagar ( महेन्द्रनगर ), is a town in the far west of Nepal, about 6 km from the border with India and the Mahakali river border at an altitude of 214 m. Bhim Datta is the administrative seat of the district of Kanchanpur in the Mahakali Zone.

Bhim Datta is one of the 10 largest cities of the country. At the 1991 census it had a population of 62.050. and 2001 there were 80.839.

The former name " Mahendranagar " after King Mahendra of Nepal was changed after the abolition of the monarchy in 2008. Bhim Datta Pant was a Nepalese freedom fighters in the last century.

Importance

Bhim Datta is the economic center of the Mahakali Zone and important border crossing to India. There is an airport with regular connections to Kathmandu. The city is western endpoint of the national east-west Mahendra Highway, which is part of the Asian Highway 2, and the starting point of branch roads in the Himalayas.
