Mahlathini

Mahlathini ( born 1938 in Newcastle, South Africa Simon Nkabinde, † 27 July 1999, Johannesburg) was an African singer nicknamed " The Lion of Soweto ". His style was Mbaqanga, the pop music of the Zulu in Soweto.

He grew up in the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg on and came by his brother Zeph to the music, who with his band Alexander Black Mambazo quite successful, and of which Ladysmith Black Mambazo later took the name. For the Gallo Record Company in 1964, he worked as a studio musician. From 1964 to 1997 ( from 1984 with producer West Nkosi ) he sang along with the Mahotella Queens, instrumentally accompanied by the Makgona Tsohle band. This band from Pretoria was discovered in 1964 by music producer Rupert Bopape. Marks Mankwane († 1998), played the guitar, Joseph Makwela an electric bass guitar.

His first received international attention in 1985 by Mahlathini a contribution to the compilation The Indestructible Beat of Soweto. On June 11, 1988, she appeared on the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert. Three years later, in 1991, they played with Paul Simon in front of more than 500,000 people in Central Park in New York.

Mahlathini died after months of illness from the effects of diabetes. As part of the renaming of many streets in post-apartheid Johannesburg, the former Minnaar Street was dedicated in Fordsburg Mahlathini.
