Mahmud bin Küchük

Mäxmüd Khan of Astrakhan (*, ? † 1470s ) was one of the sons of Kuchuk Muhammed and a Dschingiside who has in the 1460ern founded the Khanate of Astrakhan.

After years of struggle for the throne of the Golden Horde against his brother Akhmat Khan he fled to Xacitarxan near modern Astrakhan, where he established an independent khanate on. He was able to maintain peaceful relations with its powerful neighbor, the Nogai Horde and the Khanate of the Golden Horde and coined his own money.

A letter to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, sent on 10 April 1466 is an example of diplomatic writing the Kipchak - Tatar language of the 15th century. This is about a renewal of the diplomatic relationship between Astrakhan and Istanbul as well as the posting of ambassadors.
