Mahnomen County, Minnesota

The Mahnomen County is a county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. In 2010, the County had 5413 inhabitants and a population density of 3.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mahnomen.

The entire County is located within the White Earth Indian Reservation of the Anishinabe.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Minnesota and is the west about 80 miles from North Dakota removed. It has an area of 1510 square kilometers, of which 70 square kilometers are water surface.

From east to west the county is drained by the Wild Rice River, a right tributary of the Red River of the North.

History

The Mahnomen County was formed on December 27, 1906 from parts of Norman County. It was named after the Indian word for wild rice.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Mahnomen County 5413 people in 2007 households. The population density was 3.8 people per square kilometer. In the 2007 households lived statistically 2.65 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 50.6 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 40.0 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 8.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 2.4 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

29.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 54.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.4 percent were 65 years or older. 49.7 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 39,385. The per capita income was $ 18,533. 26.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
