Maia Ciobanu

Maia Ciobanu ( born May 5, 1952 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian composer.

Ciobanu studied at the Conservatory Ciprian Porumbescu composition with Dan Constantinescu and Myriam Marbe and piano with Aurora Ienei, also at Ştefan Niculescu, Mircea Chiriac, Liviu Comes Aurel Stroe and. In 1980 she attended at the Darmstadt Summer Courses composition courses with Brian Ferneyhough, Gérard Grisey, Wolfgang Rihm, Hans Peter Haller, Włodzimierz Kotonski, Tristan Murail and others. In 1995 she studied at the Swedish Academy of Music in Gothenburg.

Since 1992 she has been musical director of the Group for Contemporary Music Alternative. Since 1993 she is professor at the Bucharest theater and film school ( Institutul de arta şi Teatrală Cinematografica " IL Caragiale "). She gave courses on contemporary Romanian music at the music academies from Gothenburg ( 1995) and Cologne ( 1996), at the Pedagogical College of Rorschach (1997 ) and the University of St. Gallen ( 2000).

Ciobanu is the founder and editor of the English-language journal Contemporary Music - Romanian Newsletter of the Romanian Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music, which she was president in 2002 and 2003. In addition, Ciobanu operated in publishing and produces music programs for the Romanian broadcasting. She is a member of the Romanian Composers Union, as well as the International League of Women Composers ( ILWC ), the International Computer Music Association (ICMA ) and the Société des auteurs, Compositeurs éditeurs et de Musique ( SACEM ).
