Maiana

Maiana is an atoll in the central Gilbert Islands of Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean State above the equator and located 28 km south of the main atoll of Tarawa.

Geography

The northern and eastern side of the atoll formed by a single island. The western boundary of the lagoon is a coral reef. The atoll is 14 km long and 9.5 km wide.

In the northern part of the lagoon are the uninhabited islands Bikenmamara, Bikentiroi, Bikentunua and the inhabited island Tebikerai Iceland with the place Tebikerai; in the southern part of the lagoon, the uninhabited islands Bikenibuni, Bikeningako, Tekatoka, Bakanikarau, Nanuteute, Tuakiri, Abaokoro, Bikentiang, Arinnanona and the southernmost atoll of the Islet, Toiaki Iceland.

There are numerous traps for fishing on the east side of the narrow reef there.

According to the census of 2010 lived on the atoll in 2027 people who were distributed among twelve settlements.

History

The initial review found by Thomas Gilbert, the captain of the convict transporter Charlotte of the First Fleet, on June 17, 1788 instead.

Mid-19th century Maiana was involved in the conquest of the " Kingdom of Abemama " by the chief ( Uea ) King Tem Karotu and was the king Tem Binoka ( Tembinok ') tribute.

After the British colonial period Maiana formed with Kuria, Abemama Aranuka and Nonouti the administrative district headquarters Gilbert Islands.

Modern Times

Local administrative authority is the Island Council ( Iceland Council).

Maiana sends two MPs in Parliament maneaba ni Maungatabu in South Tarawa: in addition to the non-party politician Teiwaki Areieta which I Maiana nominal border Atoll residents are also the current President of the Republic of Kiribati, Anote Tong, represented.

Traffic

Maiana is served twice weekly by the state-owned airline Air Kiribati, since January 2009, also by the private airline Coral Sun Airways. The airfield Maiana Airport is located in the northern part of the atoll, 250 meters away from the places Tekaranga and Temantantongo.

On 13 July 2009, a ferry capsized Tarawa shortly before reaching Maianas and demanded 33 deaths.
