Maidla Parish

The rural community Maidla ( Maidla vald ) is located in Ida- Viru county in northeastern Estonia.

Description and History

Its area is 332.3 km ². The municipality has 755 inhabitants ( as of 2010). Administrative center of the municipality is the village land Savala.

Maidla was mentioned as Maydalae the first time in 1241 in Liber Census Daniae documented. The rural community has existed since 1917. It was expanded in 1938 as part of the Estonian territorial reform again. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the local self-government was abolished. It was restored after regaining of Estonian independence on 9 April 1992.

In the south of the forested municipal district is the nature reserve Muraka, a bog and marsh area located north of the Great Lake Peipus.

Coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms is based on the original family coat of arms of the aristocratic Baltic German family Maydell. It shows three silver-colored fish in a stream. Maidel ( genitive Maidla ) referred to the Estonian fish carp gudgeon. Which the municipality crossing river Purtse corresponds to the crest of a blue oblique Links bar. The yellow background of the emblem stands for the fertile fields.

In addition to the main town Savala the country parish includes the villages Aidu, Aidu - Liiva, Aidu - Nõmme, Aidu - Sooküla, Aruküla, Arupäälse, Aruvälja, Hirmuse, Koolma, Kulja, Lipu, Lümatu, Maidla, Mehide, Oandu, Ojamaa, Piilse, Rebu, Rääsa, Salaküla, Sirtsi, Soonurme, Tarumaa, Uniküla, Veneoja and Virunurme.

Manor of Maidla

Worth seeing is the manor house in the village Maidla. The farm was first occupied in 1465. The property belonged to the noble family of the 1499 Maydell. The name of the Maydells probably goes back to the place name Maidla.

The original manor house was destroyed in the Great Northern War. The current manor house was the German - Balt Georg Ludwig von Wrangell 1765-1767 build by the architect Johann Paul Tallinn Dührschmidt in Baroque style. Since 1925 it houses the School of Maidla. The house is now also used for services as part of tourism.
