Maillat

Maillat is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Maillat is located on 505 m above sea level. Level, about 17 kilometers southwest of the city Oyonnax (air line). The village is located in the northern Bugey, in a wide valley in the Jura, at the confluence of Borrey and Doye for Oignin.

The area of ​​11.31 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the southern French Jura. The eastern part is occupied by the 1.5 km wide, oriented in north-south direction valley of Oignin that forms a syncline the Jura folds and is drained north to the Ain. To the east of the municipality of soil ranges with a narrow tip to the Valley of Doye, south to that of Borrey ( Combe du Val ). To Maillat include the hamlet Oisselaz ( 575 m above sea level. M. ) at the eastern foot of the Montagne d' Oisselle as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Maillat are Saint -Martin- du- Frêne the north and east, in the southeast Chevillard, Condamine, Vieu - d'Izenave and Labalme in the south and Ceignes and Peyriat in the West.

History

Maillat made ​​since the 13th century a parish that was from Nantua monastery dependent. Since 1280 the village was the center of its own little rule, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy. The Treaty of Lyon Maillat arrived in 1601 to France. 1932, the hamlet Oisselaz was combined with Maillat.

Attractions

The present village church was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the style of Neo-Romanesque and the hl. Irenaeus dedicated. From the 13th century, the Château de Maillat comes. It was extensively restored in the 19th century; residential buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries have been preserved. In the castle park is the former church.

The Chapelle Sainte -Claire is classified as a monument historique since 1931.

Population

With 670 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Maillat one of the small communities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1896 618 persons were still counted ), a population increase was recorded since the early 1960s again.

Economy and infrastructure
