Tasks

Besides the border security was one of the first tasks of the HVS in the Clearance of the coastal waters of the GDR of sea mines. With the mine clearance could have been started in September 1952. However, no mines were found. At the same time the head office Seepolizei served from the outset as the core of a future Navy of the GDR. Therefore, the crews were trained for military tasks, such as the outposts and the escort service.

The task of border security was in May 1952 by the HVS over to the German border police.

Personnel and training

The maritime police was able to draw on their construction, only a small proportion in experienced military personnel because many of the members of the former Kriegsmarine had gone when the war ended in British and American prisoners of war and in the Western occupation zones. In addition, we deliberately wanted to avoid connecting factors to the Wehrmacht. Therefore, the training from the beginning was at the forefront of preparation efforts.

Already in March 1950 had been started in Parow with building a Seepolizeischule, which later named after its first leader, the Fleet School " Walter Steffens " was born. The school took on August 1, 1950 to the operation. 1952 were also founded a naval officer - educational institution and an engineering school of engineering. In addition, many officers were sent for training in the Soviet Union.

Until the end of 1951 the number of staff grew to about 3,000 men.

Equipment and materials

In May 1950, the Soviet armed forces surrendered six minesweepers held by the former Navy and later an auxiliary vessel. Added to this were the wrecks of four Danish warships, which should be prepared to supply vessels. For service to the coast, the marine police also 150 horses and some vehicles received.

In 1951, more boats were supplied by the Soviet Union and the GDR yards. The building program saw the procurement of 20 Seekuttern, later as coastal defense boats ( KS- boats) respectively. In addition, larger mine search and minesweepers were commissioned, whose construction began in early 1952.

After submitting the task Border 1952 KS- eight boats were handed over to the German border police in June.

Organization

The management of the maritime police was in East Berlin. It was headed by a Inspector General (equivalent to Vice- Admiral ) Waldemar Verner, Chief of Staff was Heinz Neukirchen. You were under each one minesweepers and a coast guard boat division, a salvage command, schools and a ship home department. Since July 27, 1950 also the newly established Seehydrographische service of the GDR, the HVS was assumed. The exact organization changed several times.

Transition in the People's Police Kasernierte lake

According to the provisions adopted in April 1952 statement of Soviet governance for the establishment of a regular army in the GDR, the units of the HVS have been restructured as a people police to sea ( VP- Lake ) to lay the foundations for the establishment of an effective maritime force. On 1 August 1953, the integration was carried out in the Kasernierte People's Police (CIP), with their conversion to NVA on March 1, 1956 was finally managing naval forces of the NVA ( from 1960 People's Navy ) and her surgically imputed Border Brigade coast.
