Maipo (volcano)

The Maipo is a 5,264 m high, an active stratovolcano in the Andes on the border between Chile and Argentina ( Mendoza Province ). His cone rises 1,900 m above the bottom of a 15x20 km wide caldera, which was created about 450,000 years ago.

The last known eruption dates back to the year 1908. At the eastern foot of the approximately 7x4 km wide Laguna del Diamante was formed during an eruption in 1826 at an altitude of 3,300 m.

Ascents of the volcano carried out usually from the nearby San Carlos.
