Mairan (crater)

40.08

Mairan is an impact crater on the plateau of the area between the Oceanus Procellarum to the west and the Mare Imbrium to the east peninsula. In north- north-east lies the crater comparable in size Sharp and northwest of the heavily eroded crater Louville. Along the southwestern side of the peninsula runs a sinuous groove that carries the name Rima Mairan and extends over a distance of about 100 kilometers from north to south.

The outer edge of Mairan was only slightly damaged by erosion and subsequent impacts and has retained its sharp-edged ridge. The surrounding area is rough and irregular, and, especially in the south and west, scarred from a myriad of tiny craters. The crater interior walls have a number of terraces and fall on a relatively flat crater floor out from.

In the west of Mare Mairan a small dome- shaped elevation rises labeled ' Mairan T'. This has at its highest point to a tiny crater.
