Majolus of Cluny

Maiolus (* 906 in Avignon, † May 11 994 in Souvigny ) was a Benedictine and 964-994 Abbot of Cluny. Other spellings of his name are: Majolus, Mayeul and Maieul.

From 954 he was coadjutor of Aymardus ( Aymard ) the then abbot of Cluny, who was blind. From 964 (?) He succeeds by Aymardus. As abbot, he was the head of the Cluny movement and reformed numerous monasteries. He was one of six major abbots of Cluny, who led the department for mental and economic prosperity. Under Maiolus the abbey church of Cluny II was built. This church was one of the most important church buildings of their time.

Beginning 973 Maiolus was kidnapped by the Saracens and released after paying a ransom. The retaliatory action that Count William I of Provence undertook thereafter, led to the Battle of Route Tour and the expulsion of the Saracens from Provence.
