Major duodenal papilla

The major duodenal papilla, papilla or papilla of vater ( after Abraham 's father ) is a small collection with a sphincter, the sphincter muscle Oddii, at the common mouth of the common bile duct ( common bile duct ) and pancreatic duct ( pancreatic duct ) in the duodenum (duodenum ).

The sphincter muscle Oddii (syn. sphincter of Oddi, sphincter ampullae hepatopancreaticae ) is a smooth annular sphincter, which is regulated by its state of contraction, the emptying of bile from the common bile duct and the secretion of the pancreas from the pancreatic duct major in the duodenum. It is named after Ruggero Oddi (1864-1913), an Italian surgeon.
