History

The first railroad was from Mallorca engineer Eusebi Estada i Sureda (1843-1917) planned and opened on 24 February 1875. The voltage applied in a track width of 914 mm (3 English feet ) range of Ferrocarriles de Mallorca resulted from Palma to Inca. Until 1927 it expanded its route network via Manacor to Arta, Sa Pobla, of Santa Maria, on the route Palma - Inca to Felanitx and from Palma to Santanyi. 1941 submitted to a first track section still, in 1964 and 1977, followed by other sections. Since the mid- 1990s, a modernization program is running. Thus, the remaining tracks were rebuilt at a track width of 1000 mm and opened closed lines again. In the years 2005 to 2007, it established a new central station in Palma. In March 2010, work on the route extension from Manacor to Arta started, this is to be built as so-called Tren Tram. Already in the spring of 2011 six three-piece rail vehicles Vossloh were delivered for the planned commissioning. Due to unexplained financing end of July 2011, a freeze on the new route was imposed. Existing construction ( buildings, roads, underpasses, traffic diversions ) lie fallow. In April 2013, the Acting Regional government subsequently indicated that the route to Arta will no longer be expanded. The section Palma-Inca - Enllaç was electrified with 1500 V DC, the line was put into operation on 16 February 2012.

The 27 -kilometer-long railway line with 13 tunnels and 52 meters long viaduct Cinc Ponts was opened on 16 April 1912. An electric tram, also with 914 mm gauge from Sóller to Port de Sóller was connected and opened the following year; also ran freight to the naval base in Port de Sóller. The main line was electrified in 1929 by Siemens -Schuckert. The wood-paneled rolling from the opening year is still in operation today and is called in German-speaking tourists circles " Red Lightning ". Locals do not use this term.
