Majordomo (software)

Majordomo is a management application for electronic mailing lists ( Mailing List Management System, or MLM). Majordomo is open source and was developed by Great Circle Associates. It works with Sendmail or other Mail Transfer Agents as Postfix on UNIX and similar operating systems.

The current version is 1.94.5 dated 19 January 2000.

Its heyday began in 1992, when many users indeed had access to the e -mail communication, but could not directly access the World Wide Web or the Usenet. That's why today the intended method of logging on and off by e- mail commands appear as somewhat awkward. For more convenience web-based front-ends were created later. The best-known front-end is Majorcool, which is integrated into the Majordomo installation on the server, and with the help of which the list also operate without e- mail commands to manage them.

While in the past virtually all mailing lists with Majordomo were operated numerous list owners are now switched to newer and more secure mailing lists management systems. Alternatively, they now some commercial hosting providers like Yahoo Groups, domeus or kbx8 a mailing list of operation are available.
