Majorette (dancer)

Majorette is the term for a woman or a girl who operate a formation dance in uniforms and thereby interact with the Bâton. The resulting sport is also referred to in the German area as Twirling.

Origin

The name comes from the French Majorette and goes back to the originating from the military field officer rank of Major. In order for a young girl in uniform, paraded on ceremonial parades is described that a so-called Bâton ( rod) swirling around with skill after rehearsed choreographic forms.

History

End of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century paraded in the United States, the first female marching bands with a female drum major who claimed the clock with the stick. By type of Gewehrpräsentierübungen began to turn the Baton and thus developed feats. The female drum majors were called Drum Major Girls, later as drum majorettes or simply as majorettes. In the 1940s in the U.S. were strengthened girl groups in parades, where several participants juggled a stick and threw a habit and after the second world war came this custom to Europe.
